The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.3) at Virginia Tech is a comprehensive first-professional architecture program designed for graduate applicants whose previous bachelor’s degree is in a field other than architecture, including other design disciplines. Students build from foundational design and architectural theory into building design, construction technology, environmental systems, urban design, professional practice, and independent research culminating in a thesis.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: The first year establishes the foundations of architectural design through intensive studio and seminar work. ARCH 4715/4716 Qualifying Design Laboratory develops understanding of form, environmental awareness, aesthetic judgment, and architectural inquiry, while ARCH 4705/4706 Qualifying Design Seminar introduces the historical, ethical, intellectual, and theoretical foundations of architecture; students also study ARCH 5134 History/Theory of Architecture and ESM 3704 Basic Principles of Structures.
Year 2: Students progress into integrated building design and technical development through ARCH 5515/5516 Architecture and Systems Laboratory, where building systems, structure, assembly, and construction are incorporated into architectural design. ARCH 5565/5566 Building Materials and Construction develops knowledge of materials and construction processes, while ARCH 5775G/5776G Intermediate Building Structures and ARCH 5755G Building Environmental Systems strengthen students’ understanding of structural and environmental technologies; the required summer ARCH 5755/5756 Advanced Design Lab provides an intensive integrative design experience.
Year 3: The final year shifts toward independent architectural investigation, professional preparation, and thesis development. Through ARCH 5994 Research & Thesis, students pursue individual research and prepare a substantial thesis, complemented by ARCH 5624 Urban Design Seminar, ARCH 5134 History/Theory of Architecture, and ARCH 5044G Professional Practice, which connects advanced design study with urban issues, architectural history/theory, and professional practice.
Focus areas
Architectural design, design inquiry, building systems, structures, materials and construction, environmental systems, architectural history and theory, urban design, professional practice, research and thesis development.
Learning outcomes
Students develop the ability to conceptualize and communicate architectural ideas, integrate building systems and construction technologies into design, understand architectural history and theory, address urban and environmental considerations, and undertake independent architectural research and thesis work.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
The Virginia Tech M.Arch.3 is a first-professional degree fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Virginia Tech states that most U.S. registration boards require an accredited professional architecture degree as a prerequisite for licensure, and its M.Arch. program meets the educational requirements listed for licensure in all U.S. states and Washington, D.C.
Reputation (employability rankings)
Virginia Tech’s official School of Architecture reports that its graduate Architecture program ranked #13 nationally in the 2019–20 DesignIntelligence rankings, while its graduates were ranked 4th nationally for being hired by firms.
The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.3) at Virginia Tech is strongly studio-based, with students developing architectural design skills through dedicated design laboratories, fabrication, construction, building systems, and research. Students can work with analogue and digital fabrication technologies, advanced visualization tools, and research facilities, while opportunities such as the W_Internship provide direct exposure to architecture firms, project teams, construction sites, and professional workflows. The program also offers access to Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC) and international study opportunities, giving students additional ways to connect architectural education with real-world environments.
Key experiential learning opportunities include:
The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) at Virginia Tech prepares graduates for professional architectural practice through advanced design, construction, technology, and critical thinking. As a NAAB-accredited first-professional degree and STEM-designated program, it also provides a strong pathway toward architectural licensure and, for eligible international graduates, up to 36 months of U.S. practical training through OPT/STEM OPT.
Typical career roles: Architect, Architectural Designer, Design Technologist, Urban Designer
Career development and professional opportunities include:
Further Academic Progression: After completing the M.Arch., students interested in research or specialized academic work can progress to Virginia Tech's Master of Science in Architecture (M.S.Arch.) or Ph.D. in Architecture and Design Research. The Ph.D. offers Architecture and Design Research tracks, with research areas including architectural representation and education, architectural history and theory, historic preservation, computing and representation, building science, social impact design, biodesign, and design technology; Virginia Tech also notes that the M.S.Arch. can provide a basis for entry into Ph.D.-level study.
