Program Overview

The Yale M.Arch. II Post-Professional Design Research is a two-year, full-time program for students who already hold a professional B.Arch. or equivalent degree and want to pursue advanced, transdisciplinary design research. Study: Students explore design, representation, spatial thinking, and research through advanced studios, design-research seminars, electives across Yale, and an independent thesis addressing contemporary architectural, cultural, social, environmental, technological, and urban issues.

Curriculum Structure

First Year: Students begin with advanced design studios and the research-focused seminars ARCH 7003 Design Research I: Design as Research and ARCH 7004 Design Research II: Cross-Disciplinary, developing methods for connecting architectural design with research and contemporary issues. Students also choose electives across areas such as design and visualization, technology and practice, history and theory, and urbanism and landscape, while taking two courses outside the School of Architecture.

Second Year: The second year centers on independent research through ARCH 5005 Independent Design Research Studio I and ARCH 5006 Design Research IV: Independent Studio II, where students develop their individual thesis projects through advanced design investigation. The final studio culminates the post-professional curriculum, allowing students to transform individual and group research into a final design thesis using forms such as drawings, publications, exhibitions, performances, or digital experiences.

Focus areas: Transdisciplinary design research, architectural representation, spatial thinking, design and visualization, technology and practice, history and theory, urbanism and landscape, contemporary built-environment issues, independent thesis research.

Learning outcomes: Students develop the ability to conduct original design research, formulate critical architectural questions, connect research methods with design, work across disciplines, investigate sites and contexts, and communicate new forms of architectural knowledge through rigorous visual, spatial, written, and other media.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The M.Arch. II is a post-professional degree and is not NAAB-accredited; Yale states that it does not fulfill the education requirement for architectural licensure in jurisdictions following NCARB requirements. Yale’s NAAB-accredited M.Arch. degree is the professional M.Arch. program, not the M.Arch. II.

Reputation (employability rankings): Yale’s official M.Arch. II program and School of Architecture sources reviewed do not publish a program-specific QS, Guardian, or other employability ranking. Yale does, however, report that its 2021 School of Architecture alumni survey received 1,043 responses, including 188 M.Arch. II alumni respondents, while its Career Development service connects students and graduates with architecture firms and organizations offering employment and internship opportunities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Yale’s M.Arch. II Post-Professional Design Research program is built around advanced design research, combining collaborative inquiry with independent architectural investigation. Students develop practical research and design skills through advanced studios, workshops, cross-disciplinary seminars, and a year-long independent thesis project, with opportunities to work across drawing, image-making, physical fabrication, publications, exhibitions, performances, and digital experiences. Design Research Workshops: ARCH 7003 Design Research I combines seminars, case studies, research exercises, and group work to build theoretical, contextual, and methodological foundations for each student’s thesis.
Group Projects: ARCH 7004 Design Research II: Cross-Disciplinary requires students to investigate contemporary issues in architecture and urbanism through both individual projects and group work.
Advanced Design Studios: First-year M.Arch. II students undertake advanced design studios taught by leading practitioners, working alongside M.Arch. I students while developing research relevant to their own interests.
Independent Thesis Studio: ARCH 5005 Independent Design Research Studio I and ARCH 5006 Design Research IV: Independent Studio II allow students to develop an original research-based design thesis through individual and group work.
Research Methods: Incoming students receive training in Yale’s online catalog, architecture databases, image resources, print resources, and archival resources through the Arts Library Research Methods workshop.
Digital Media Facilities: Students have access to two advanced computer labs, an imaging and 3D-scanning lab, printing facilities, large-format plotters, dedicated laser-cutter rooms, and cloud-based digital infrastructure.
Design Software: Yale provides software including Rhinoceros, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk Recap, SketchUp, ZBrush, FreeCAD, Sculptris, and digital-fabrication applications such as Slic3r, Autodesk PowerMill, and MadCAM for Rhino.
Workstations & Digital Tools: Each student receives a high-end workstation with two LCD monitors and a wide range of software and integrated design tools; digital cameras, drawing tablets, and camcorders are also available for checkout.
Fabrication Labs: Students can use Yale’s fabrication labs for studio assignments and independent projects, with equipment for model-making, furniture fabrication, sculpting, and building-system exploration.
Advanced Fabrication: Facilities include laser cutters, waterjet cutters, 3-axis and 4-axis CNC mills, a 5-axis robotic 3D printer, 3D printers, and a robotics lab with seven robots.
Rapid Prototyping: Students have access to technologies including a Zünd digital knife cutter, desktop and large CNC mills, multiple 3D printers, industrial laser cutters, and other rapid-prototyping equipment.
Field & Original Research: Thesis research can involve engaging with archives and objects, conducting field studies, and investigating how spatial-production techniques connect with other research methods.
Digital & Physical Thesis Outcomes: Students can develop thesis work as publications, exhibitions, performances, or digital experiences, supported by rigorous media production, drawing, image-making, and written research.
Arts Library: The Arts Library supports M.Arch. II research through architecture databases, image collections, print resources, archival resources, and research-methods training.
Cross-Disciplinary Learning: Students are required to take courses outside the School of Architecture, while Yale-wide electives allow them to connect architectural research with other disciplines.
