2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Global Immersion Experience (GIE) is a required part of the University of Virginia's M.S. in Commerce programme. It allows students to take their business education beyond the classroom through international company visits, cultural activities and discussions with business professionals, helping them understand how global markets operate across different regions.
Important classification note: The Global Immersion Experience is not a separate master's degree or standalone academic programme. It is a compulsory international learning component within the M.S. in Commerce and should therefore be recorded as a programme feature or experiential learning component rather than an independent degree.
Structure and Learning Experience
The GIE takes place during the spring semester and includes 7 credit hours of coursework. Students begin with classroom preparation at UVA before travelling abroad with faculty members and classmates for an intensive international learning experience.
Stage 1: Foundations of Global Commerce
Students begin with GCOM 7870: Foundations of Global Commerce (3 credits). This course introduces international business practices, global economic conditions and the cultural and political factors that influence businesses in different regions. Through case studies, analytical tools and team projects, students build a foundation for understanding international markets.
Stage 2: Global Immersion Abroad
In May, students participate in a faculty-led international experience that includes:
A one-week residency in Charlottesville to prepare for the selected region.
An intensive three-week overseas programme.
Visits to company headquarters, manufacturing facilities, distribution centres and local markets.
Meetings and discussions with business professionals and UVA alumni.
Cultural activities and opportunities to explore the region.
Students typically visit three to four major cities during the overseas experience.
Stage 3: Commerce in the Global Context
Students complete GCOM 7549: Commerce in the Global Context (1–4 credits). This course builds on their earlier learning and explores business practices across international regions, along with important issues affecting global commerce.
Example International Destinations
The university changes its destinations from year to year. Previous examples and regional routes featured on its official page include:
Europe and North Africa: Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Morocco.
Scandinavia and the UK: Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Latin America: Colombia, Peru and Argentina.
Southeast Asia: Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Students submit their preferred regions during the fall semester and are assigned to one of the available global courses. Destinations are not guaranteed and may change each year.
Key Learning Outcomes
Through the Global Immersion Experience, students learn to:
Understand how economic, political and cultural conditions influence international business.
Compare business practices across different countries and regions.
Apply classroom knowledge to real-world business situations.
Develop cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills.
Evaluate global business challenges through company visits and professional discussions.
Build international networks through interactions with business professionals and university alumni.
Practical and Professional Value
The GIE gives students valuable international exposure as part of their M.S. in Commerce. They gain a closer understanding of how organisations operate in different markets while interacting with business professionals and university alumni. The experience also helps strengthen cultural awareness, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills, which are useful in international business careers.
The overall M.S. in Commerce is a 10-month, full-time programme designed primarily for graduates from non-business academic backgrounds. The university reports that the Class of 2025 achieved an 89% employment-outcomes rate and an average annual base salary of USD 82,000. These figures represent outcomes for the entire M.S. in Commerce programme, not specifically for students participating in the GIE.
