2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Master of Science in Construction Project Management at Worcester Polytechnic Institute is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to prepare students to manage complex construction projects from planning and design through execution and delivery. Combining civil engineering, management science, business, economics, and project management, the program develops expertise in cost estimation, construction scheduling, risk management, resource planning, and Building Information Modeling (BIM).
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: Students develop core construction management skills through courses such as CE 580 – Advanced Project Management, CE 584 – Advanced Cost Estimating, CE 587 – Building Information Modeling, and CE 501 – Professional Practice. They also study a primary engineering specialization and supporting subjects in management science, business, or economics.
Year 2: Students complete advanced electives and interdisciplinary coursework aligned with their career interests. Thesis-track students undertake CE 599 – M.S. Thesis (6 credits), while non-thesis students complete an entirely coursework-based plan of study with approved electives.
Degree Requirements: 30 semester credit hours for both thesis and non-thesis options. The program is also available online.
Focus Areas
Construction Project Management, Construction Engineering, Cost Estimation and Control, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Sustainable Construction, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Management, Business and Operations Management.
Learning Outcomes
Construction project planning and execution, cost estimation, resource allocation, project scheduling, risk mitigation, contract administration, BIM application, construction management, financial decision-making, interdisciplinary problem-solving, professional communication.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
The program develops professional competencies in construction management, engineering processes, contract administration, and project delivery. Program-specific accreditation: Separate ACCE or ABET accreditation for this master's program is not stated in the official program information.
Reputation & Employability
Industry engagement: Students work closely with faculty who have practical construction management experience and industry consulting backgrounds.
Practical learning: Hands-on projects, case studies, industry-standard simulation software, and field research opportunities.
Research opportunities: Students can explore sustainable building development, BIM applications, construction cost analysis, and project performance management.
Career relevance: Prepares graduates for opportunities in construction companies, engineering consultancies, project management firms, and infrastructure development organizations.
WPI's Construction Project Management programme emphasises practical, project-based learning that connects engineering principles with the everyday challenges of construction delivery. Students work with faculty who have professional construction management experience and engage with case studies, applied projects, research and industry-related problems. The programme's combination of engineering, business and management subjects helps students understand how design decisions, costs, schedules, contracts and resources influence project success.
Practical Learning and Research Opportunities:
Hands-on project work: Core learning includes practical projects and case studies in advanced project management, cost estimating and building information modeling, allowing students to apply classroom concepts to construction scenarios.
Advanced Project Management: Students develop skills in coordinating construction activities, managing resources, planning project delivery and addressing challenges across different project stages.
Advanced Cost Estimating Procedures: Students learn approaches to estimating and evaluating construction costs, supporting budgeting, financial planning and cost control.
Building Information Modeling (BIM): Students explore digital modeling processes used to improve construction planning, coordination and project information management.
Research-based thesis: Students choosing the thesis option can work with faculty on a research topic connected to construction and infrastructure. WPI highlights previous student research on life-cycle cost analysis for sustainable buildings, BIM applications in university renovation projects, and performance indicators for predicting project durations.
Industry field research: Many students undertake field research with local engineering and construction firms and projects, gaining exposure to professional practices and real project environments.
The M.S. in Construction Project Management prepares graduates to take on responsibilities involving construction planning, project coordination, cost management, contract administration and infrastructure delivery. Its interdisciplinary curriculum helps students understand both the technical and business dimensions of construction, preparing them to contribute to complex projects and progress towards leadership positions in construction and engineering organisations. The programme is relevant to professionals seeking to strengthen their project management expertise as well as engineering graduates looking to enter the construction management field.
Career Opportunities:
Construction Project Manager: Lead construction projects from planning and budgeting through execution, monitoring and completion.
Construction Manager: Coordinate construction teams, contractors, materials, equipment and schedules to ensure projects meet their objectives.
Project Engineer: Support technical planning, design coordination, site activities and project documentation.
Cost Estimator: Prepare project cost estimates, evaluate resource requirements and support budget planning and cost control.
Industry Sectors: Graduates can pursue opportunities in construction and infrastructure development, engineering and design consultancies, real estate development, commercial and residential construction, transportation infrastructure, project management consulting, building technology and sustainable construction.
Industry-Relevant Skills: The programme develops capabilities in project scheduling, cost estimation, resource allocation, BIM, construction contracts, risk mitigation, negotiation and conflict resolution. These skills are relevant to organisations managing large-scale construction, building renovation and infrastructure projects.
Research and Professional Exposure: Students can gain exposure to industry challenges through faculty-led research, field research with local engineering and construction firms, and applied projects. WPI's Design-Build Institute of America student chapter also provides an opportunity to engage with a professional organisation focused on design-build practices and project delivery.
Career Development: WPI provides graduate career outcome resources covering employment trends, industries and salary information. The university reports that 87% of its master's and PhD recipients are employed or continuing their studies shortly after graduation. This is an institution-wide graduate statistic and should not be interpreted as the employment rate for Construction Project Management graduates specifically.
Further Academic Progression: Graduates interested in advanced study may pursue doctoral research in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, or related areas such as infrastructure systems, sustainable construction, project risk and building technology, depending on the research interests and entry requirements of the institution. At WPI, students may also explore related graduate study and research opportunities in Civil Engineering and other engineering disciplines.
