Graduate research areas within the program include: ecology; evolution and behavior; microbiology and immunology; and molecular, cellular, and computational biology. To earn a degree under the supervision of our faculty, students may apply for direct admission into the department, or may apply to a number of interdepartmental graduate programs that also allow the earning of Biological Sciences degrees (BIOTRANS, ID, MCB, TPS), or that grant specific degrees (GBCB, TBMH). Students with interests in ecology, evolution, and behavior may gain additional training in interdisciplinary research, the science-policy interface, and science communication by participating in the Interfaces of Global Change program. Students in Molecular, Cellular, and Computational Biology may elect to work under the supervision of faculty on our Blacksburg campus or faculty at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute in Roanoke. Those interested in working at the interface of biology and mathematical modeling will be offered additional training opportunities through the Mechanistic Biological Modeling Group.
