MS in Biology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Virginia

Program Overview

The MS in Biology at the University of Virginia provides advanced scientific training through independent research, specialized coursework, and faculty mentorship. Students can explore areas such as Molecular Genetics, Cell & Developmental Biology, Ecology & Evolution, and Neurobiology & Behavior, preparing for careers in scientific research, biotechnology, conservation, and related fields.

Curriculum Structure

The program requires at least 30 graduate-level credits, including 24 credits of graded coursework, and a research-based master's thesis.

Year 1:

Students develop their scientific foundation through four graded lecture or laboratory courses and a colloquium or journal club. They also complete Professional Skills for the Life Sciences I (BIOL 8240), Professional Skills for the Life Sciences II (BIOL 8250), and Research Ethics (BIMS 7100) while beginning supervised research with their faculty mentor.

Year 2:

Students advance their specialization through graduate electives, departmental seminars, and independent laboratory research. They continue thesis research under faculty supervision, work with their thesis committee, and prepare and defend their written master's thesis.

Focus Areas: Molecular genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, neurobiology, animal behavior, biological research.

Learning Outcomes: Apply advanced biological concepts, conduct independent research, develop experimental methods, analyze biological data, interpret scientific findings, demonstrate research ethics, communicate scientific results, and prepare research publications and presentations.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
