Program Overview

The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures offers a rigorous doctoral program in theoretical linguistics, drawing on work in syntax, phonology, phonetics, morphology and more to train authoritative scholars with a comprehensive understanding of the discipline. We have a long tradition of field work-based research and work closely with speakers, collaborators and educators in our local First Nations communities. Graduate students can contribute to Calgary Papers in Linguistics, an annual linguistics journal. They also participate in academic reading and working groups, including a psycholinguistics lab group, syntactic reading group, a Blackfoot working group, a translation working group and the Cercle Benveniste, a research group that began as an informal club.

Additional Information & Requirements

A master s degree in linguistics, or a master s degree in a related field with significant training in linguistics at the graduate level, normally including at least one graduate course in syntax and one graduate course in phonology, (GPA) in the final two years of study of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point system, TOEFL iBT of 83 and a minimum of 5.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE), IELTS of 6.5 (Academic version) , MELAB score of 80, PTE score of 59, 3 Reference letters, Work samples, A statement of purpose specifying the applicant s research interests and reasons for wishing to pursue a Master of Arts degree at the University of Calgary
