University of Calgary was founded in 1944. It is a public research university situated in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Initially the Calgary began as a branch of the University of Alberta. University of Calgary became a separate university in 1966. The university consists of 14 faculties and over 85 research institutes and centers.

University History

In 1944 University of Calgary was founded as a branch of University of Alberta. Later, became a separate university in 1966 by passing the Universities Act by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. In 1960s, the University of Calgary's campus expanded with new buildings for engineering and science, new University Theater in Calgary Hall and, in 1971, the launch of the architecture program. In 1966, The Banff School of Fine Arts affiliated with the University of Calgary. In 1988, the University of Calgary played an important role in hosting Canada's first winter Olympic games, the XV Olympic Winter Games. In May 2001, the University of Calgary tartan was accredited by the president of the Scottish Tartans Society, and the director of the Register of All Publicly Known Tartans.

University infrastructure & services

Campuses-

Main Campus

University of Calgary’s main campus was built in the 1960s. The main campus is home to 11 of faculties, research and athletics facilities, and huge support services for students, faculty and staff. The campus is located in Calgary's northwest quadrant area, and it is spread across more than 200 hectares. The north side of the campus includes the buildings for Sciences, Engineering, Biology, Social Sciences and Kinesiology whereas on south side professional faculties includes Education, Environmental Design, Nursing, Social Work, Business, and Law. Fine Arts and Humanities facilities in the heart of campus include the Art Building, Craigie Hall, and various performance theaters.

Foothills Campus

University of Calgary’s Foothills campus was supposed to launch by the Board of Governors as a medical school in the 1960s. Foothills Campus began working in 1975, with the opening of the Health Sciences Building, built beside the new Foothills Hospital. In 1967, the university's Faculty of Medicine was created, which relocated from main campus atto foothills campus. In 1987, the Heritage Medical Research Building was built to accommodate more than 100 new biomedical and health care researchers in the campus. In 2011, the Health Research Innovation Centre (HRIC) opened, which consists of a lab block as well as Teaching, Research and Wellness building. The Cumming School of Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are headquartered at the Foothill campus.

Downtown Campus

On September 13, 2010, the University of Calgary’s Downtown campus was opened which is located at 8th Avenue and 8th Street S.W. The building serves as a home to classes which includes Continuing Education, and energy & environment, and classes by Haskayne School of Business and the School of Public Policy. It also consists of administrative offices for the Development and Alumni Engagement division and the main office of the University of Calgary Alumni association and a conference center.

Spy Hill Campus

University of Calgary operates a satellite campus named Spy Hill campus in the far northwest corner of Calgary on 85 Street N.W. The campus serves as a home to the university's new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the High-Density Library, a climate-controlled warehouse for books and other printed material for which there is no longer storage room at the main library.

As an international student, you will need to have specific permits and visas to study in Canada.

Initial Study Permit

All University of Calgary students need to have legal status in Canada, and you will need to present your status documents to get your student card. If this is your first time applying for a study permit, you can do it at the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. You can apply for your permit as soon as you receive your Offer of Admission from the University of Toronto and decide to accept. Because the permit legally entitles you to study in Canada, you will need it before you enter the country.

Temporary Resident Visa

Students from certain countries may also require an entry visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), to enter Canada. TRVs are issued by Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC).

CIC’s requirements may differ depending on your specific geographic region. For instance, some CIC offices require proof of English language proficiency in the form of a standardized test (such as TOEFL or IELTS). A medical examination and proof of funding may also be required.
