The two courses differ in that research at MPhil level represents an extension of existing knowledge, while at PhD level, students will be expected to make an original contribution to knowledge. Most students enrol first for MPhil and transfer to PhD when their work has developed sufficiently. The University normally expects all prospective MPhil / PhD students to complete the PgCert in Research prior to enrolling as a research student. However, students may be exempt from this on the basis of 'advanced standing'.
