MS Experimental Surgery

5 Years On Campus Phd Program

University of Minnesota Twin Cities

Program Overview

The general surgery program trains medical doctors for the practice of surgery and for academic positions. See the Medical School Catalog for professional degree requirements. Trainees spend two to three years in laboratory research, either in a basic science or in surgery, after which they begin their senior residency and chief residency training. The Medical School's laboratory departments offer many graduate courses closely related to surgery (see the graduate programs in biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics; cellular and integrative physiology; microbiology, immunology, and molecular pathobiology; and pharmacology). These fields also offer opportunities for research work. The Department of Surgery offers supervised work in its experimental research laboratories, as well as in its hospital and outpatient departments in the areas of surgical diagnosis and operative surgery and in some surgical specialties (such as colon and rectal surgery, transplantation, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, and pediatric surgery).
