Established in 1851, University of Minnesota Twin Cities is the flagship land-grant university in the state’s five-campus system. It is a public research university and offers more than 150 majors and minors. The University of Minnesota is one of America's Public Ivy universities, which refers to top public universities in the United States capable of providing a collegiate experience comparable with the private Ivy League universities.

The university comprises of 18 colleges- Biological Sciences, Continuing Education, Dentistry, Design, Education and Human Development, Extension, Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, Graduate, Law, Liberal Arts, Management, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Affairs, Public Health, Science and Engineering and Veterinary Medicine. The university offers more than 200 graduate and professional degree programs. The university has the only veterinary, pharmacy and dental colleges in the state.

The university has more than 900 student organizations. The total student population at the university is more than 51,000 of which the number of under graduates exceeds 34,300. University of Minnesota has the student to faculty ratio of 17:1. Total faculty members at the university are about 3,800 and include members of National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Medicine.  The current and former faculty have won Guggenheim Fellowships, MacArthur Fellowships and Nobel Prizes. With more than $870 million annual research spending, the University ranks 8th among public universities in terms of research expenditure.
