University History

The University of Minnesota, Twin cities is a public university that stretches around two cities known to be the Twin cities that are Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The University was founded in the year 1851and is situated on the banks of the Mississippi river. In the initial years, it started as a college preparatory school but in 1867, the university was bestowed with the Land Grant status through the Morrill Act of 1862.  The University receives funding every year from the State of Minnesota. It is known for its research, various courses and also for its engagement with various communities and organizations in addressing various societal and pressing issues. The Motto of the university is to work towards excellence.

University Infrastructure and Services

Campuses 

The University of Minnesota has a twin city campus in St. Paul and Minneapolis. The campus is surrounded by the Mississippi river which makes it one of the beautiful campuses around the city. The campus in Minneapolis is divided by the Mississippi river into the East Bank and the West Bank. The East Bank comprises many Residential halls of the University and also some of the famous spots of the University like the Mall Area, Knoll Area, the Health Area that has the University of Minnesota Medical Center, and the Athletic Area and so on. The East Bank also has the Walter Library, Northrop Auditorium. There is also the Pillsbury Hall that is considered to be one of the oldest buildings of the University. The West Bank of the University has the University of Minnesota Law School, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, Carlson School of Management and so on. The West Bank which is spread across 53 acres of the land has different centers in the campus like the Raring Center, the Barbara Barker Center for Dance, Ferguson Hall  etc. These particular centers are famous for organizing various festivals and events of the University. 

The St. Paul campus of the University is just 4.8km away from the Minneapolis campus. This campus particularly comprises the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Biological Sciences and also the College of Design. 

There are bus services connecting both the campuses that make it easily accessible for the students. The buses are in the service during the college hours. 

Library

The University of Minnesota has 13 library facilities around both the campuses. These libraries are accessible by both the students and the faculties. The libraries are expected to have around 7 million volumes that comprises books, journals, e-books, magazines and so on. How to apply?

The Housing application for the new students starts in November. The cost of the application fee is $50. It is advisable to apply as early as possible considering the demand of the facilities. One can list up to 25 different choices of the housing services that are available on campus. 

While applying one has to keep a note of the following things. They are:

Medical services

The University of Minnesota has its own medical center that has gained accolades over the years for its discoveries, research and services. There are four hospitals that are affiliated to the center: 

  • The University of Minnesota Medical Center, situated in the East Bank of Minneapolis.
  • University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, at the main campus of the University across the Mississippi river

There is Need-based Financial Aid provided by the University after considering the annual income of the family and how much they can pay. Need-based self help gives loans to students for various work studies. There is also merit-based aid that is given to the students for their special achievements. Visa and Immigration support

There are two categories of Visa that are given to the International students; they are the F1 and J1 visa. One can know the type of the Visa depending on whether they have received an I-20 or DS-2019. If one has received an I-20 then F1 Visa will be allotted. If received DS-2019 then J1 Visa will be allotted. After the categories of visas are allotted one is supposed to check whether all the information provided by them is appropriate. Then after that students are required to pay the SEVIS fee for entering the US. This fee is charged by the Department Homeland Security. Then complete the visa application form and apply for an interview. Before appearing for the interview, you have to take a note of the required documents that are as follows:

  • Valid passport
  • I-20 or DS-2019 document
  • Admission letter (or print out of electronic admission notification)
  • Documented proof of financial support for one year or more (scholarship or assistantship letter, bank statement, etc.)
  • Receipt of SEVIS fee payment
  • Visa application forms (available from the U.S. embassy/consulate)
  • Any documents requested by embassy/consulate

Student life

There are various events and festivals going around the campus every year that keeps the students busy and even entertained. There are various clubs and societies that students can be part of according to their interests. There are around 1000 student groups and organizations in the twin cities campus. 

The University has its own sets of magazines and also their very own radio station known as KUOM. The Recreation and Wellness community of the University also keeps on organizing various fitness and wellness programs. 

Arts and culture

The University is surrounded by various museums and art centers like the Northrop, Weisman Art Museum, Bell Museum of Natural History, Guthrie theatre, Walker Art museum, Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This gives the students an opportunity to look at the world differently. 

Student’s safety 

There are various campus connector shuttles that one can have access to that are absolutely free. There are also cycles and convenient bike facilities for the students to go around the campus. The University has its own team of staff that looks after the safety and security of its faculties and students. 

The Minnesota Student Association is actively engaged in various programs of the University. The Graduate and Professional Student Assembly is responsible for the governance of the students of the university. 

Sports and athletics

The students have made the University always proud of their achievements. The athletics teams are called the Minnesota Golden Gophers and are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. There is a University's hockey team that has brought laurels to the university. The football team has won many national championships. There are also basketball teams and also a Women's hockey team. There is also a Women Gymnastic Center and Women Rugby. 

Job opportunities

The office of Human Resources gives students information regarding various career options. It helps the students find a suitable job according to their interests. There are both part-time and full-time jobs available for the students.

Scholarships for International students

The University offers The Global Excellence Scholarship to the International Freshman students who have received the f1 visa. They are automatically considered for the scholarship. One is expected to receive $25,000, $15000, $10,000 per year for up to four years. One has to maintain the required criteria to keep receiving the scholarship.
