The Science & Engineering Research Board in India was founded in 2008 by an Act of Parliament, with the purpose of supporting basic research in developing areas of Science and Engineering. It offers financial assistance to academics occupied in research, academic institutions, laboratories, and industry, and strives to build up best practices in the promotion and funding of basic research.
Since 2015 the Board and the Cambridge Trust have granted a program of jointly-funded Ph.D. scholarships for Indian students in STEM areas; the scholarships are called the Cambridge India Ramanujan Scholarships. The awards are named after Srinivasa Ramanujan, a mathematical genius who was widely self-taught but who spent five years in Cambridge working with the leading mathematicians of the day.
