Glenn D. Kirwin Scholarship

After the September 11, 2001 tragedy, family and friends founded a memorial scholarship honoring the life of Glenn D. Kirwin, a member of the Class of 1982.  The annual scholarship will be awarded to a rising third- or a fourth-year student enrolled in the University of Virginia whose character and involvement in University life most resemble Glenn’s.  These characteristics include leadership, determination, generosity and wisdom; the capability for original and creative thought; and a passion for entrepreneurship.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

As Glenn would certainly appreciate, there will be no objective requirements to qualify for a scholarship (though children of victims of the September 11th tragedy will be given priority).

The selection process will focus on recognizing an individual who, like Glenn, is a character with character.

The student to whom the scholarship is awarded will have taken full advantage of the diverse opportunities that the University offers in the manner that Glenn did. The recipient will also share some of the many extraordinary qualities that Glenn exhibited at UVA and in his life after college.

The evaluation process will weigh all forms of engagement in University life, including fraternity/sorority membership; participation in student-run activities and institutions, including newspaper and other media organizations; demonstrated an interest in athletics; entrepreneurship and other non-scholastic activities.

The committee will award $20,000.
