The Sydney Elizabeth Owens Memorial Award has been established by her family and friends to remember Sydney. At UVA, she was an Echols Scholar, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and sailed around the world in her third year through the Semester at Sea program. Sydney lived on The Lawn during her fourth year and graduated with honors in 2009. Following graduation, she traveled to Tanzania to teach in an elementary school and explore many of the wonders of Africa. Sydney then moved to Denver, where she lived until her death.
In 2012, the family and friends of Sydney Elizabeth Owens, Class of 2009, established a scholarship not only to remember Sydney but to give back to UVA, the place she loved.
