Purdue University West Lafayette

Program Overview

Behavioral neuroscience (the application of the principles of biology to the study of physiological, genetic, and developmental mechanisms of behavior in humans and animals) serves as the foundation of Brain and Behavioral Sciences. This area is combined with traditional areas of cognitive psychology (memory, thinking, and reasoning), learning and motivation, statistics and mathematical models of behavior in humans and animals. This program prepares students to work within all areas of psychology, multiple areas of business, many areas of health care, and a wide range of social services. The Brain and Behavioral Sciences major is especially appropriate for students interested in the more science or math-oriented areas of psychology. This major also offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school, such as medical school.
