Language studies look into multiple issues related to the use of language, such as how language can be learnt, how language is composed (letters, syllables, words, sentences), and how grammatical and structural aspects work together to create meaning and logic. Students learn about concepts such as phonology, syntax, semantics, or phonetic analysis. They get a chance to become aware of the linguistic subtleties of poetry, may focus on pronunciation and sentence fluency, and learn the historical and development of language studies. Students will acquire excellent oral and written communication skills. They will also become proficient in data analysis, as well as gathering and interpreting information.
The PhD in English Literature trains students to become independent scholars, teachers, critics and thinkers in the arena of literature and, more broadly, the arts. During the programme, students do coursework, embark on a Qualifying Exam and write an 80,000 word thesis. For the PhD, the maximum duration for both full-time and part-time study is 60 months. Those awarded an NUS scholarship are required to reside in Singapore for the duration of the scholarship award. Foreign students on a student pass must pursue their studies on a full-time basis.

Cultural Studies in Asia is a field of teaching and research which challenges conventional disciplinary boundaries to rethink received knowledge on existing issues and to address emergent concerns thrown up by the rapid changes and impact on cultural practices, brought on by new technologies and the new phase of global capitalism.
