Established in 1998 by the Irish Government to honor the former U.S. Senator who served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships provide funding to twelve U.S. citizens for one academic year of graduate study in any discipline at any university in Ireland (both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). The goal of the Mitchell Scholarship is to “interest the next generation of American leaders in the island of Ireland.”
Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines
Evidence of significant achievement in three areas: academic, leadership, and commitment to community and service. All three areas are essential.
Although the Mitchell Scholarships do not require a minimum grade point average, it is expected that the applicant will exhibit academic excellence in his/her undergraduate work as well as strong preparation for the proposed field of graduate study.
