Sandstorms closes schools in Iraq

posted on: May 16, 2022

Heavy sandstorms have hit Iraq in unanticipated numbers in the past week. The Baghdad authorities including the Education Ministry declared a day off for the local government institutions leaving just the health care department. The locals say that it has become a regular site and occurs once in every 3-4 days. The cause is said to be a lack of rainfall and whenever there is some wine it kicks off the dust which causes the sandstorm. Iraq is the fifth most vulnerable country to the climate crisis according to the UN. Many Greenlands are becoming barren and deserted due to lack of rainfall.
