Calcutta University is a place of great historical significance. It has a lot of firsts attached to its name like establishing the first college for women to the first medical college in India under its name. Rabindranath Tagore who is the first nobel laureate is also associated with this college. Though famous for its heritage and the national lineage, the college couldn't keep up with the contemporary education revolutions. The curriculum has been almost the same from the past many decades. The university was recently ranked the top university in The Times Higher Education Rankings 2022. The university also grabbed 14th position globally in the ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’ sub-category of the THE Impact Rankings 2022. In the ARWU 2022 rankings, it was ranked second in the country. What sets the university apart is not just its treasurable history but also its different aspects that sets it different from the rest like departments in Tamil, Buddhist studies, Pali, linguistics. Many colleges that now have an autonomous status were started under the name of CU only.
