Many students pay a lot of attention towards their SATs and GPS. There is a common belief that if you are a top ranker in your class during high school, your chances of getting selected in your dream university are higher than the rest of the students. Well, this is not an entirely true statement to make. Colleges now no longer can pay importance towards just the academic part of a student's application.
They select students based on a holistic perspective after reviewing their personality and achievements in totality. This means that your extra curricular achievements, your volunteer work and your participation in summer programmes or similar activities will also be counted. Of Course having a good class rank will add on to your application but this doesn't mean that you have a higher chance of getting selected in the university of your dreams than a student who has not topped his class.
