Banning of books from library shelves

posted on: May 21, 2022

With time literature has become more inclusive. People from different age, backgrounds, genders, race, colour etc are finding themselves getting representation. But as books are becoming more transparent with time, they are also causing unsettling among the so-called self proclaimed 'guards' of the society. The more literature talks about prejudices and social evils, the difficult it becomes for them. In 2021, 1597 books were tried to be removed  from the bookshelves by the American Library Association. The number was 156 attempts in 2020 and 377 in 2019. Most of these consisted of books regarding LGBTQ and racist issues. Some books have been challenged which means they will be assessed and until then it will remain in circulation whereas a ban implies a total removal of those books or materials circulation.
