Canada lost 86 percent international students from India in the last quarter of 2023

posted on: February 02, 2024

Due to the political tension between India and Canada, Canada lost 86% of international students from India. In the fourth quarter only 14,900 visas were issued to Indian students which is very low as compared to other quarters. In 2022, 41% of the total student visas that were issued were given to Indian students. However, one of the major reasons why Canada has decided to put a curb on international students is not just because of political tensions. There has been a major housing crisis in the country.

Students are not able to find accommodation and a certain black market is also emerging because of the same reason. This was one of the major reasons why Canada increased the minimum financial requirement criteria in the beginning of 2024 and made it double. But the problem of housing will remain the same if a huge number of students keep coming to the country every year. To solve this problem, Canada decided to put a restriction on the number of international students that can come to the country every year.
