IIT Madras has officially opened its first overseas campus in Zanzibar. This is the first time any IIT from India has opened its abroad campus. This initiative is a part of India's large scale venture to globalise Indian education. Initially the Zanzibar campus of IIT Madras will offer courses in data science and artificial intelligence at both bachelors and masters level. The institute will slowly increase the number of courses offered. Right now the campus has accommodation facilities, dispensary and eating facilities. The university will soon introduce various sports facilities for students as well. The Zanzibar campus will have a direct collaboration with IIT Madras. Students from the Zanzibar campus will be able to take part in student exchange programmes and other initiatives started by IIT Madras.
