IIT Bombay IIT Hyderabad and other top NITs remove the branch change option for students

posted on: September 02, 2023

Most of the top engineering institutes of India like IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, and other top NITs have removed the option for students that allows them to change their branches after taking admission. Around 17 NITs  and several IITs have taken this decision in solidarity. After this change, it is expected that the cut-off for lower branches in top institutions will also rise. Earlier most of the students who scored top ranks would take admissions in the top 20 institutions of the country even if they were offered lower branches. Since most of the institutes provided the option of upgradation on the basis of CGPA of the first semester or first year, the students would end up changing their branch after the first year. To avoid this, the option of upgrading has been removed.
