New Zealand universities have been alarming students about the high visa rejection rates by the New Zealand immigration department. Around 28% of the total student visa applications from India to study in New Zealand were rejected in 2022. This figure rose to 40% in 2023. Additionally, there is a problem of lack of allocation and processing. There are also a lot of students who are not given a final verdict and the visa is neither processed nor rejected keeping the student in doubt. In 2024, from January to April, around 5018, student visa applications were processed and out of which 2010 visa applications were rejected. On the other hand, the total rejection rate for Chinese students stands at 2% with just 206 rejections out of the total 8012 applications.
