Oldest universities in the world

Most of you wouldn't know, but the concept of higher education and studying in universities goes back to hundreds of years ago. Students from hundreds of years have been leaving their homes to study in famous universities far from their home. Imagine how it would have been like when there were no telephones and laptops for communication. Here is a list of universities that were established hundreds of years ago and are still operating which is why they are considered as the oldest universities of the world-

  • The University of Al Quaraouiyine, Morocco

This university was founded in 895 CE by a woman called Fatima al-Fihri. It was almost the first educational center in the world which gave degrees to people upon the completion of their education. It became a hub of spiritual and religious knowledge.

  • The University of Bologna, Italy

This used to be the place of interest for people who were highly intrigued by the concept of politics. People used to come here to study civil law in the 11th century.

  • The University of Oxford, UK

Oxford is one of the most famous universities in the world in present day. It has given the world a huge number of Nobel prize winners and famous personalities. The university was established somewhere between 1096 to 1167. This means that it is around 1000 years old.

  • The University of Salamanca, Spain

This University was established in 1134 it was in 1218 that it was given the Royal Charter. It is the oldest university in Spain and today around 27,500 students from around the world are studying here in different programmes and courses.
