Recession has gripped the world economy and many companies are combating recession to employ layoffs. Some of the biggest employer layoffs has been by Google and Microsoft where hundreds of employees have been fired. Most of these people were from computer science and tech backgrounds. In situations like these, an international student might wonder if computer science is the right degree to pursue. In 2023 alone, around 174 companies had around 54,000 employees. One of the major reasons why companies have to lay off employees in such big numbers is the fact that most of the companies hired thousands of employees during the pandemic when the demand was high.
Now that everything's back to normal and the pace of the demand is as usual, the revenue per employee has fallen immensely. Now coming back to the question, is a computer science degree worth it? It is safe to say that the per quarter income of a computer science graduate has fallen down in the past year. But as a computer science degree holder you can do a lot of different things. You can become a game developer, you can do website building and so many more things. But generally a computer science degree is very expensive.
The return on investment is not as good for everyone equally. For you to cover up your expenses spent on education, it will take some years of earning and working. Now it depends on you and your passion about the profession. There are people who have not spent a lot of money on their education and are still making a lot from their jobs.
