The University Grants Commission has reversed its decision of making PHD the minimum qualification for the post of assistant professor in universities. Now students can clear the NET exam and apply for the post of assistant professors in universities. PhD qualification will continue to be optional for universities. The National Eligibility Test and state eligibility test will both be functional. Back in 2018, UGC gave this basic criteria to universities for the selection of assistant professors. Three years were given to candidates to pursue their PhD to be appointed as professors in universities. This decision became effective from 2021 and most of the universities. Now the decision has been taken back by UGC after much controversy.
