UK universities likely to experience increase of international students

posted on: October 12, 2022

There has been a massive increase of 34% in international students studying in the UK from 2016-17 to 2020-21. India and China have always been huge markets for the UK as thousands of students come here annually to study. But lately, there has been an increase in the number of international students coming from countries like the US, Nigeria, and Pakistan. For many years China has been the number one exporter of international students to the UK. But this year it has been reported that the number of international students that went to the UK surpassed the number of international students from China. China and India are the two most populated countries in the world. This means that both of these countries will always have a huge impact on the Education market of the UK. But it is also very important for the UK to focus on other potential markets besides these two countries and not be dependent on just them. The number of student visas issued to Pakistan has grown by 377% in 2022 as compared to 2019. In 2019 merely 4,900 student visas were given to international students whereas the number grew to 23500 by June of 2025. Currently, the top non-EU countries getting the most UK student visas are-

  • India
  • China
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • United States

Whereas the top EU countries getting the most number of UK student visas are-

  • France
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Greece
