What are the implications of the UK’s move to ban dependent visas

posted on: August 21, 2023

Recently, the United Kingdom revealed its plans to restrict people from coming to the UK under dependent visas. Only certain students pursuing courses like PhD and other research-based courses will have the liberty to bring their relatives or family members with them on dependent visas. This decision has made a lot of controversy in the academic world as many students are now apprehensive towards going to the UK. A huge number of students decide to study abroad while considering bringing at least one of their family members along with them. more than 42,000 dependent visas were only granted to Indian residents in 2022.

The government has initiated the decision keeping in mind the overcrowding of immigrants in the UK. The positive with this step will be that now, more student visas and immigrant visas will be accepted since the government is planning on cutting dependent visas. Anyways, the undergraduate students were not allowed to bring dependents with them so it won't affect them at all. But the UK is also considering stopping students from letting their study Visa to switch to work visa while still completing their education in the UK. This might also affect the decision of international students and further discourage them from studying in the UK
