Study in New Zealand

New Zealand is an island country with a population of only 4.5 million and a total land area of around 268,000 square kilometers. It is situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and is part of Oceania. Also known as the land of the long white cloud, New Zealand comprises of two main islands- the North Island and the South Island- and other smaller islands. Summer starts in December in New Zealand, whereas winter starts around June. The geography of this country is highly varied and dramatic, ranging from lowland plains to volcanoes to snowcapped mountains. The native population is the Maori people, but nowadays New Zealand is home to various ethnicities from around the world.

How to Apply

There is no central admission system for the Universities in New Zealand, so students must apply to each university separately. Applications can be either submitted online on the institutions’ website or sent by airmail.

Application Process

The application process will vary depending on which university and course you choose. Usually universities will charge the student an application fee of NZ$25 to NZ$50, and some schools offer exemption from the fees. Students must check their visa requirements before applying - courses shorter than 3 months do not require a visa, while longer courses do. The documents needed for the university application usually contain class 10 and 12 transcripts, proof of funding, a statement of purpose and reference letters from schools or employers. Some universities also require ACT/SAT scores, along with an English proficiency test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Deadlines and Cost

The Academic year for New Zealand universities starts from February and goes on until November, with a 1 month break in June/July. The dates vary for every institution, so it’s best to check the exact dates for your chosen university. Most universities start accepting applications in August for the upcoming semester in February. It is recommended that the student apply as early as possible

Tuition fees differ based on institution and level of study chosen. An undergraduate degree will usually cost NZ$18,000 to NZ$25,000 per annum, whereas a postgraduate degree will cost between NZ$10,000 to NZ$30,000 annually. Living expenses in New Zealand will largely depend on location and on the student’s lifestyle, usually ranging from NZ$7,000 to NZ$12,000 per year. It is imperative that students do their research about the institution and the living arrangements to get a better idea of the cost of living in different parts of the country.
