Victoria University of Wellington Background and History
Victoria University is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious tertiary institutions with a proud tradition of academic excellence. The University, originally known as Victoria College, was founded in 1897. This was the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Victoria University of Wellington Programs Courses and Schools
The university is well known for its programs in law, the humanities, and some scientific disciplines, and offers a broad range of other courses. Victoria University has over 22,000 students, including over 3,500 international students from more than 110 countries. In 2017, we awarded 4,543 qualifications at graduation ceremonies.
The University has over 2,200 full-time equivalent staff and over 1,000 of those are involved in teaching and research. About half our academic staff were born outside New Zealand. The University has 10 faculties, eight of which conduct teaching and research. Each faculty is divided into schools.
Victoria University of Wellington Campuses
Victoria University has three main campuses in Wellington. They also have premises in Auckland and teach a joint program from premises at a partner university in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In addition to the main campuses, the university has a number of research centers and institutes.
Victoria University of Wellington Achievements
Victoria University is New Zealand’s top-ranked university for research quality. More than 2,021 publications resulting from the university’s researchers’ work were published in 2017. Victoria University has five stars overall in the QS Stars rating of excellence and five stars in each of the eight categories i.e. arts and culture, discipline ranking and accreditations, employability, facilities, inclusiveness, internationalization, research, and teaching. In 17 subject areas, they are among the top 1 percent of the world’s universities (2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject).
The University library holds approximately 1.3 million printed volumes. It provides access to 70,000 print and electronic periodical titles and 200,000 e-books. It is an official Depository Library of the United Nations System (DEPOLIB), one of only three in the country.
