Roehampton University has gained international recognition for its exceptional work in the field of early childhood studies. With a team of esteemed tutors, each highly knowledgeable in their respective areas of expertise, you will have the privilege of learning from some of the top professionals in the field.

This degree program is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and resilience needed to advocate for the well-being of infants, young children, their families, and communities. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of policy and practice, and engage in critical inquiry and problem-solving related to key issues in the field. It is important to note that the BA Early Childhood Studies program provides academic study and does not, by itself, qualify you to work as an early years teacher or practitioner. Students seeking vocational qualifications should consider pursuing the Graduate Practitioner Competencies certificate, as outlined in the fifth tab on the left.

The course adopts a distinctive Froebelian approach to the study of early years, grounded in the following principles:

  1. Embracing a holistic perspective of infants, young children, their families, and their communities, recognizing the interconnections with the past, present, and future.

  2. Highlighting the vital role of play and (outdoor) environments in promoting well-being and facilitating learning.

  3. Promoting inclusion, fostering connectedness, and emphasizing a commitment to social justice within the field of early childhood.

  4. Valuing and responding to the individual experiences and perspectives of children.

  5. Continuously developing an understanding of professionalism, professional reflection, and action, establishing meaningful connections between theory, research, and practice.

Minimum entry requirement: 48 UCAS points (or an equivalent qualification)

After completing the program, you will have excellent prospects for a range of positions. These may include working in the field of education, such as in teaching, administration, or management roles in primary schools or nurseries.

Alternatively, you could pursue a career as a special needs professional, supporting students in schools, children's centers, or within the community. Other possible avenues include employment with children's charities, where you might be involved in policy-making and research, or working in community support, welfare, housing, or government departments at the local or national level.
