American College Testing, popularly known as ACT is a test introduced to measure a skill parallel to reasoning which is conceptual knowledge. It is majorly preferred by US universities. Exam pattern

ACT exam encompasses 215 multiple choice questions based on- the Reading, Mathematics, Science, English sections. It is a 2 hours 55-minute long test. While your ACT test preparation you have to prepare as per the syllabus and the test format to achieve the desired score.

ACT syllabus

English

English is the primary section of the ACT which constitutes multiple-choice questions, essays, or passages. It encircles your understanding of the language and how apt you are in the form and mechanics of the entire language. The syllabus covers- the usage of punctuation marks, mechanics, and rhetorical skills (sentence formation using the correct grammar and style of writing).

Mathematics

Mathematics consists of 60 questions which you are supposed to complete in 60 minutes. 

The mathematics syllabus covers the topics including- Pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, plane geometry, coordinate geometry, and elementary trigonometry. It also has questions on data interpretations, problem-solving questions, etc.

Science

The science portion of the ACT comprises 40 questions, for which you are allotted the time of 35 minutes. The exam syllabus consists of topics including- physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. The exam pattern has a few major passages- Interpretation, evaluation, analysis, reasoning, and problem-solving.

Reading

You will be given four passages- three long passages and one consisting of two short passages. This reading test is designed to measure your ability to understand the direct and indirect meanings as per the context of the questions. You will be required to understand, assimilate the text, and compare and contrast the ideas presented in the passages.

Eligibility for ACT 

The ACT is valid for 5 years in that case you can take the exam if you are above 13 years old and up to the students who are pursuing their high school.

Registration and exam date

The registration for the ACT starts generally 5 weeks before the exam. The ACT is conducted 6 times a year which leaves you with many attempts to give the exam and concentrate on your ACT test prep accordingly. For international students, 5 exam dates are allotted out of which 3 fall from September to December.
