Top Art and Design Universities in the US and Canada

The art and design ratings include 39 institutions in the United States, along with seven in Canada. The best 10 is made up of five Art & Design institutions from the United States, three from the United Kingdom, Italy's Politecnico di Milano, and Finland's Aalto University – the best place earned by any Finnish institution throughout the 48 topic tables.

From outside the top 10, there are many highly regarded US universities including New York's New School University (14th), California Institute of the Arts (17th), Carnegie Mellon University (18th), and Stanford University (19th).

Moving north, Canada has one entry in the top 50 this year, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, which rises from tied 40th to 30th in 2021. Concordia University and the University of Toronto are two more famous art and design colleges in Canada (both ranked 51-100).

Top Art and Design Universities in Europe

The list includes 91 of Europe's finest art schools, featuring 18 in the world's top 50. With 27 programs in the standings, the United Kingdom is the best European country. Outside of the top 10, significant UK universities are Goldsmiths, University of London (joint 15th), Loughborough University (31st), the University of Oxford (36th), and University College London (UCL, joint 48th).

Italy the best European nation outside of the UK, featuring nine schools in the ratings. The best-rated of these is Politecnico di Milano, which is placed sixth worldwide. Additionally, Italy boasts two new entries this year: NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (51-100) and Università degli Studi di Firenze (UNIFI, 201-220).

Although there are no French schools in the top 10, two are now in the top 50, with the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle, ENSCI Les Ateliers ranking 26th and the École Nationale Superieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) ranking 39th. Sweden also had two newcomers in the top 50 this year, with Ume University at joint 33rd position and Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design jumping to 26th position.

Some noteworthy European universities in the worldwide top 50 for art and design are the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (11th), Design Academy Eindhoven (12th), The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts - The School of Design (22nd), Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK, 35th), and Universität der Knste Berlin (joint 41st).

Top Art and Design Universities in Asia

Asian colleges fared well in the art and design ratings, with eight of the continent's 47 rated colleges making the world top 50. Mainland China has the best scoring Asian university, with Tongji University ranking 13th. Tsinghua University (23rd) and China Central Academy of Fine Arts (24th) are the other two Chinese universities in the top 50.

Other than that, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked 20th in the world, making it the only art institution in Hong Kong to crack the top 50. Singapore featured three participants in the standings, and two of them made it into the worldwide top 50, with the National University of Singapore (NUS) placing 28th and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ranked 43rd.

South Korea, featuring nine schools, is the most well-represented Asian country in the art and design list after Mainland China. Yet, only one of these in the world top 50 — Seoul National University (SNU), which is ranked equal 39th.

Top Art and Design Universities in Australia and New Zealand

The ratings include 12 Australian art and design schools, as well as four New Zealand institutions. Massey University in New Zealand has the best-ranked program, ranking 51-100.

Australia has three institutions listed in the top 50 in the world, with RMIT University being in equal 15th position. The University of Technology Sydney (UTS, 25th rank) and the Queensland University of Technology are also among the top 50 (joint 48th place).

Top Art and Design Universities in Latin America

Latin America fared well in this year's art and design ratings, with 16 schools rated internationally, including the one in the top 50. Mexico's Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is rated tied 48th in Latin America.

Another such five Latin American programmes, namely Universidad de Buenos Aires and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, make the world top 100. Featuring four schools, Mexico is the most well-represented Latin American country, followed by Brazil, Chile, and Colombia, all of which have three institutions on the list.

Top Art and Design Universities in the Middle East

This year, two Middle Eastern colleges are also included in the art and design standings; no institutions from this region were included in last year's list. These are the American University of Sharjah (151-200) in the United Arab Emirates and the American University of Beirut in Lebanon (AUB, 201-220).
