Art Center College of Design History

Art Center College of Design began as the Art Center School in downtown Los Angeles in 1930. Fred R. Archer established the photography department in 1935, and Ansel Adams was a guest instructor in the late 1930s. During and after WWII, Art Center collaborated with the California Institute of Technology on a technical illustration programme. The school's name was changed to Art Center College of Design in 1965.

Art Center College of Design Programs, Courses, and Schools

 Art Center in Los Angeles offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in a wide range of art and design fields, as well as public programmes for children and high school students and continuing education for adults. It is one of the few schools that offer an Interaction Design degree. The college has two campuses in Pasadena, both of which are architecturally significant. The student-to-faculty ratio at the College is 8 to 1. Art Center offers 11 undergraduate and 10 graduate degrees in a variety of industrial design, visual and applied arts disciplines, as well as undergraduate minors in Business, Creative Writing, Material Science, Research, and Social Innovation. The Industrial Design Program offers a joint MS/MBA in collaboration with the Drucker School of Management, and the Integrated Studies department offers a First-Year Immersion programme that supports students' transition to undergraduate-level majors with a specialized two-semester course of study.

Art Center College of Design's USP/Achievements include the fact that, while art and design schools are not frequently included in typical undergraduate rankings such as "U.S. News & World Report," Art Center has been recognised by a number of national and industry publications. Design Intelligence consistently ranks the college's undergraduate and graduate industrial design programmes first. Art Center's Art, Industrial Design, and Media Design Practices programmes are also ranked among the top 20 graduate schools in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. The growing influence of Art Center's Film programmes recently resulted in the college being named to The Hollywood Reporter's list of the Top 25 Global Film Schools.

Art Center College of Design infrastructure & services

Campus

The Art Center College of Design has two campuses in Pasadena: Hillside and South. Classrooms and studio space, multiple computer labs, the James Lemont Fogg Memorial Library, a model shop with traditional tools as well as rapid prototyping technologies (multi-axis CNC, laser-cutting, and multiple types of 3D printing), painting facilities, the Color, Material, and Trends Exploration Lab (CMTEL), a (Auto) Interior Simulation Lab, the Sinclaire Pavilion, photo and film stages with printing and editing facilities, and both a c The City of Pasadena has designated the Hillside Campus as a historic monument. Art Center College of Design South Campus opened in 2004 in a former aircraft-testing facility built during WWII, and it houses the graduate Art and Media Design Practices programmes and studios, exhibition space for both programmes, a print shop, a letterpress studio, and public programmes such as Art Center at Night, Art Center for Kids, and Design-Based Learning Lab. The Wind Tunnel, a 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) exhibition space, is currently home to the Media Design Practices programme.

Library

Art Center Library, which has over 90,000 volumes of books and periodicals, as well as subscriptions to over 400 magazines and 11,000 DVDs of feature films, animation, documentaries, and other resources on art and design. The Library not only provides a quiet space for students to work independently or in groups, but it also has extensive collections of zines and video games, as well as subscriptions to dozens of online databases. To assist students in realizing their creative vision, a reference librarian and other trained staff are available for research assistance and online resource instruction.

Housing services

Although Art Center College of Design does not currently provide on-campus housing, the Center for the Student Experience (CSE) assists students in locating off-campus housing in Pasadena and Los Angeles. Prospective, admitted, and current students are encouraged to contact the CSE for information on a variety of living arrangements, including roommate searches, rooms within homes, guest houses, apartments, and houses for rent, as well as utilities, amenities, rental costs, and landlord contact information for each listing.
