For admission to a Bachelor's degree at New York University (NYU), international students must submit the following documents, take required entrance tests, and meet English language proficiency requirements:
1. Application Form
Complete the Common Application or the Coalition Application for undergraduate admission.
2. High School Transcripts
Provide official transcripts from all secondary schools attended. Transcripts should include detailed marks or grades achieved during high school. If the transcripts are not in English, they must be translated.
3. Standardized Test Scores
SAT/ACT: NYU has a test-optional policy for the SAT or ACT. While submitting scores is not mandatory, students who feel their scores reflect their academic potential may choose to submit them.
Subject Tests: While optional, NYU may recommend subject tests or AP exams depending on the intended program.
SAT/ACT Scores: If submitting scores, NYU looks for competitive SAT or ACT scores. Average SAT scores typically range between 1500 and 1570, and ACT scores range from 33 to 35.
4. English Language Proficiency Test
International students must demonstrate proficiency in English through one of the following tests:
TOEFL: Minimum score of 100 (internet-based test) or 600 (paper-based test).
IELTS: Minimum score of 7.0.
Duolingo: Minimum score of 120.
PTE Academic: Minimum score of 70.
Cambridge English: A minimum score of C1 or C2 is acceptable.
If the student has attended an English-medium secondary school for at least three years, NYU may waive the English language proficiency requirement.
5. Letters of Recommendation
Typically, two letters of recommendation are required. These should come from teachers or academic advisors who know the student well and can speak to their abilities and potential for success at NYU.
6. Personal Statement or Essays
The application will require personal essays or a statement of purpose. These essays provide insight into the student’s background, achievements, and motivation for applying to NYU.
7. Application Fee
An application fee is required unless you qualify for a fee waiver. The fee is typically around $80.
8. Interview (Optional)
Some applicants may be invited for an interview (in-person or virtual). While optional, it can provide an additional opportunity to demonstrate interest in the program and showcase personality and goals.
9. Financial Documents
International students must submit proof of financial resources to cover tuition, living expenses, and other fees during their studies. This includes bank statements or affidavits of support demonstrating at least $60,000 USD for the first year of study.
