At the age of ten, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, enrolled in the University of Glasgow in 1834. At the age of 22, he returned and assumed the position of Natural Philosophy (Physics) chair, which he held for 53 years. He was regarded as the greatest scientist of the nineteenth century and was well-known around the world for his theoretical and applied studies in almost every branch of the physical sciences.
