Robert Calderbank is the director of Duke University's Information Initiative and a professor of mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Warwick University in 1975, an MSc from Oxford in 1976, and a doctorate from Caltech in 1980. In 1980, he began working at Bell Labs, and in 2003, he retired as Vice President for Research and Internet and Network Systems at AT&T Labs. After that, he taught mathematics, electrical engineering, and applied and computational mathematics at Princeton until relocating to Duke in 2010 to take the position of dean of natural sciences.
