Hertfordshire University When a new "Earth-like" planet is discovered, astronomers are crucial. Proxima b, the recently discovered planet, may harbour surface water and life because it is located in the Habitable Zone surrounding Proxima Centauri, the star nearest to our Sun. About 4.2 light years (or 25.2 trillion miles) from Earth, Proxima Centauri is a part of the Alpha Centauri triple system of stars. It is also the focus of the StarShot project, which is humanity's first effort to visit another star system.
