Led by chemist Merilyn Manley-Harris, researchers at the University of Waikato identified DHA as the precursor to methylglyoxal (MGO), the compound responsible for the antibacterial properties of mānuka honey. This discovery enabled more accurate assessment and prediction of honey's medicinal quality.

Originally designed by the University of Queensland and later developed by the University of Waikato's School of Engineering, the UltraCommuter is a hybrid electric concept car. It features a lightweight aluminum honeycomb chassis and can achieve speeds between 120 km/h and 170 km/h, with a range of up to 400 km using dual lithium battery packs.
