At WiCyS 23′ annual conference FIU was rewarded the Student Chapter Leadership Award. The award was very unexpected since there was no application for it. Dr. Mondal’s research group explored the use of the graph attention network (GAT) to develop their multi-omics integration framework, MOGAT. In their research, they explored two sets of breast-cancer data using their new approach. Their findings demonstrated “that GAT embeddings provide a better prognosis in differentiating the high-risk group from the low risk group” in providing cancer subtype predictions in different scenarios.
Shekhar Bhansali, an Alcatel Lucent professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, created a wearable sensor to help people manage their alcohol intake. Activity trackers monitor your steps; this innovative sensor measures your blood alcohol level. Worn like a watch, this sensor picks up vapors from the skin and sends the data to a server.
Students recently created an assistive technology company that empowers the visually impaired with the security and freedom to go anywhere. Their product is a pair of smart glasses that gathers visual data and a haptic feedback belt that substitutes touch for sight to recreate a 3D environment. The visually impaired can then better navigate and respond to the physical world around them.
Three entrepreneurial women decided to launch a new clothing swap app – Bonnee – making it easier for people to trade their clothes and accessories with others.
Sireen works by attaching sensors to trees throughout the forest that calculate sounds, temperature, oxygen levels, and other critical data. If these data points rise to unsafe levels, alarms will trigger alerts.
