Notable Innovation

01.
Penicillin

Penicillin, which Alexander Fleming discovered at St. Mary's Hospital, which is now a part of Imperial College London, transformed the way that bacterial infections were treated.

02.
iKnife

Surgeons can quickly determine whether the tissue they are cutting is malignant or not with the iKnife, an intelligent surgical knife. Since it is frequently impossible for surgeons to identify malignant cells by sight, Dr. Zoltan Takats, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Surgery & Cancer, saw a need for the iKnife. The iKnife is a modified electrosurgical knife that creates a clean incision by heating tissue while it cuts. REIMS technology is used to ionise tissue smoke, which is then analysed by a mass spectrometer to reveal the chemical makeup of the cells. The first research to test the technology's efficacy found that it was 100% accurate.

03.
Gripable

Through a computer game that mimics physical therapy, the gripAbleTM device was created to help people with arm disabilities with their arm and cognitive function. The low-cost invention comprises of a portable electronic handgrip that allows the user to play arm-training games by wirelessly interacting with a typical PC tablet. One example of the work of the Imperial Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC), which is a collaboration between Imperial and three NHS Trusts, is the gripAbleTM gadget. After testing the device on stroke patients, the scientists discovered that 93% of patients were able to use gripAbleTM to perform meaningful movements to move the cursor.
