Established in 1888, the New Mexico State University (NMSU or NM State) is a public, land-grant, Research University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, United States. It is the oldest public institution of higher education in the state of New Mexico. The university is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as "R-2 Doctorate-granting University - with higher research activity". It offers a wide range of programs and awards associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees through its main campus and four community colleges.
NMSU provides extensive academic opportunities as well as a large study abroad program to students with nearly 100 undergraduate programs, 27 doctoral degrees, 56 master’s degrees, and 11 graduate certificates,. The university comprises of various schools and colleges: College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering, Graduate School, College of Health and Social Services and College of Honors. New Mexico State University sits on a 900-acre campus and enrolls students from 49 states and 89 foreign countries. The most popular majors at New Mexico State University include: Criminal Justice/Safety Studies; Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies; Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse; Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science; and Psychology.
The total student population at the university is more than 14,800 of which over 12,000 students are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 16:1 and the acceptance rate is 66%.
The university is a NASA Space Grant College and also provides students with the first honors college in the state of New Mexico. Through a statewide network of 9 research facilities, the Agricultural Experiment Station conducts basic and applied research supporting agriculture, natural resources management, environmental quality, and improved quality of life.
