The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) has achieved significant milestones throughout its history. In 1949, the football team won the Junior Rose Bowl, and by 1957, Little Rock Junior College became the private Little Rock University, offering four-year degrees. In 1969, LRU merged with the University of Arkansas System to form UALR, and the UA law program and Graduate School of Social Work were transferred in 1975. UALR established its Graduate School in 1977 and joined NCAA Division I competition in 1979. In 2011, it was recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a top-level research institution.


In 2011, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching added UALR to its top tier of research institutions, recognizing its commitment to research excellence.
UALR joined the Trans-America Athletic Conference, beginning NCAA Division I competition, significantly raising the profile of its athletics program.
The UALR Graduate School was established, broadening the scope of graduate-level education and opportunities for advanced studies at the university.
The UA Law program and the UA Graduate School of Social Work were transferred to UALR, enhancing the university’s academic offerings in law and social work.
In 1969, Little Rock University merged with the University of Arkansas System, creating the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), marking a major expansion of the institution.
The UALR football team achieved its first major victory in 1949, winning the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, a historic moment in the university's sports history.
