Established in 1961, the University of Twente is a public research university located in Enschede, Netherlands. The university is partnered with TU Deflt, TU Eindhoven and the University of Wageningen under the 4TU federation which is aimed at maximizing innovation by concentrating the strengths in research, education and knowledge transfer of all technical universities in the Netherlands.
The university comprises of five faculties: Faculty of Behavioral Sciences, Management and Social Sciences; Faculty of Engineering Technology; Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science; Faculty of Science and Technology; and Faculty of Geo-information Sciences and Earth Observation. The university also operates various research institutes such as MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology; MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine; Center for Telematics and Information Technology; Institute for Innovation and Governance Studies
The total population in the university is more than 9,600 students of which over 5,600 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 11:1.
Its close links with global companies like Google, Philips, Boeing and Siemens help the students to find work experience and internship opportunities. It is one of Holland’s most entrepreneurial universities; Twente also has a powerful start-up culture. In the past 20 years, 130 businesses and more than 800 spin-off companies have been started on campus. This entrepreneurial atmosphere encourages students to network, gain experience and find inspiration.
