Established in 1880, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public funded research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is one of the two large, public funded universities in Amsterdam, the other such university is University of Amsterdam. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighborhood of Amsterdam adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.
The university offers over 120 English taught programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level through its 8 faculties: Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences; Faculty of Dentistry; Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences; Faculty of Economics and Business Administration; Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Law; Faculty of Sciences; and Faculty of Social Sciences.
The total student population at the university is more than 24,000 students of which over 14,000 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at the university is 8:1.
