Magdalene, who was born in Kenya, came to England in 1971 to study in our foundation art and graphics degree, where she fell in love with ceramics. After earning a First Class degree, Bethan now lives and works as a freelance illustrator in Brighton. Her co-authored picture book Meet the Oceans, written by Caryl Hart and illustrated by Bethan, won the Best Curriculum Support award in Books for Topics' EYFS category in 2021. In 2014, while still enrolled in the course, she won the Macmillan Children's Book Competition with her first picture book, "Little Red," which was also awarded the New York Times' Best Illustrated Children's Book in 2016.
