Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a program that allows international students on F-1 visas to gain practical experience in the United States related to their major area of study. Students are eligible for up to 12 months of OPT after completing their degree. For students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, an additional 24-month extension is available, totaling 36 months of OPT.
Be enrolled in an SEVP-approved on-campus degree program at ATSU. Complete at least one full academic year of study. Obtain a recommendation from your Designated School Official (DSO) at ATSU. Submit a completed Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, to USCIS. Provide necessary documentation, including passport-sized photos, a copy of your passport, and the application fee.
While on OPT, you must: Work at least 20 hours per week in a position directly related to your field of study. Report your employment information to your DSO and update your SEVIS record. Not exceed 90 days of unemployment during the 12-month OPT period.
