Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was founded in 1692. It is a private art school of higher education located in Vienna, Austria.+

University History

In 1692, the Academy of Fine Arts was founded. In 1872, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria announced a law of making the academy the supreme government authority for the arts. After World War II, the academy was reconstituted in 1955 and became an autonomous body again. Since 1998, The academy has had university status and retained its original name. It is currently the only university in Austria that doesn't have the word "university" in its name. From 2011-2019 Eva Blimlinger was the first female rector in the history of the institution, together with Vice-Rectors Andrea B. Braidt and Karin Riegler. In 2017, the general renovation of the Academy building on Schillerplatz started. In 2019, Johan F. Hartle was appointed rector. He heads the academy together with the Vice-Rectors Ingeborg Erhart and Celestine Kubelka (until 2022) and Werner Skvara (from 2022).

Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is one of the leading European training centers for artists from more than 300 years. The Academy is especially dedicated to teaching processes based on research and art alike which are based on scientific and artistic research. The research findings are included in the curriculum in different ways and are spread across a huge public through exhibitions, symposiums, lectures and a publication series. The campus is home to more than 1,400 students with a variety of courses ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and video, performance and conceptual art, architecture and scenography. The campus offers great opportunities to students by organizing seminars and carrying out a great variety of projects. The Institutes on campus ensure high theoretical standards in all the departments. The program structure is based on diploma studies and/or bachelor/master programs, and is approved.

 The Library at the Academy of Fine Arts is an important part of the educational experience and an invaluable resource for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but also for the broad community. The library offers a wide range of books and other materials and services to support academic studies and enhance research work at the Academy of Fine Arts. Visa and Immigration Support-

Non-Austrian citizens who need a visa to enter Austria must apply for one to enter the country for the entrance exam. Applicants must send a letter of motivation by email or post no later than 4 weeks before the entrance exam.

The letter of motivation must contain the following points: name, date of birth, postal address, desired field of study, e-mail address and a copy of your passport.
The study department will then issue a letter of invitation with which you can apply for a visa to enter Germany for the entrance exam.

Once you have passed the entrance exam, the Department of Studies will issue a notice of conditional admission to the course, which you can use to apply for a student residence permit in your home country.
